Grid paper is simply a page covered with a continuous square grid. It is often called "quadrille paper" or "quad paper. This type of paper is often used for student graphing assignments where the teacher gives students the responsibility of determining scale and drawing the axes.

Grid paper is the type of graph paper most often used for art and drawing projects. It is used for creating floor plans, designing web pages, creating cross-stitch patterns, planning construction projects and many other purposes.

Many people who use it believe that a quick pencil and paper sketch can be created in a fraction of the time required to make the same sketch with a computer program. This works well for a single draft, but if multiple refining drafts are required, then the computer program begins to have an advantage. I decided to create a house layout with square feet area scaled. I started with the wall. The width is 2 square units. By the way, my scaling for this layout is 4 square units cells equivalent to 1 square foot. To create the lines simply create border lines on the cells depending on the scaling used. I put grid lines in purple to visualize the 1 square foot scaling. Now that the floor area has been established. I partitioned it by putting walls inside creating rooms in the layout.

I started with the bedroom and living room area. Next I worked with the bathroom and closet. At this moment I added shapes from the Shape toolbar to create figures on the layout for the lavatory, faucet bowl etc. Afterwards, I created partition for the pantry and kitchen adding also shapes to make it look more of a layout.

I refine the layout by removing the lines connecting the walls making it look as one. I did it by selecting the cells with the 'unnecessary' lines then right click on it. Select the format cells option then go to borders option and remove the unnecessary lines as mentioned.

I colored the layout on some parts. This makes it look more realistic I guess. Don't forget the labels for each area.By Meg Escott.

I like to use a combination of both software and paper based tools. At the beginning of the process if you're trying out lots of ideas I find that it can be quicker to do this on paper rather than with software. When you like an idea and want to see if it works in exact dimensions then it's quicker with software.

The first things to figure out before you start drawing your floor plan is what units and scale you are going to use. Are you going to be working in feet and inches the imperial system or in millimeters, centimeters and meters the metric system?

This decision will probably be made by the country where your home is. In the US it tends to be the imperial system. In the UK and Australia it's more common to work in the metric system. Canada's a bit of a mix but officially metric. Now let's look at the scale. To decide on the scale you need to decide what size of paper you're going to work on.

If you're working on your whole home or just a section or room you'll need to make sure that you can fit the space that you are designing onto the paper.

Most finished architectural drawings are on very large size paper which isn't going to be practical for until final drawings stage. I'd suggest working on letter 8. I like this size because it's very easy to carry it around, it fits easily on a desk or a table and there's no need to roll it. Unless your new home is going to be pretty big, you'll be able to fit your design on this size paper using a sensible scale. The table below shows what size house you can fit on what size paper with which scale.

I've included letter and A4 and tabloid and A3 just in case you want to use those sizes. Paper size. Suggested scale. Max design dimensions. Letter 8. Tabloid 11 x 17". A4 21 x A3 You can buy them in the HPH Shop. Architects scales are a triangle shape. I use a clip on top so that it's easy for me to find the side I'm using because I know which side of the ruler should be up. Before you redesign, consider switching up the room's layout. Take a cue from professional designers and reconfigure the furniture by creating a paper floor plan using a ruler, graph paper and a pencil.

Using a tape measure, determine the length and width of your room. Also note any installations or built-in furniture pieces that cannot be moved. Using a ruler and pencil, add the boundaries of the room to your graph paper. One box on the paper represents one foot. Once you have your four walls on paper, add the location and size of your doors and windows. When adding doors, mark the direction door opens to note the lost space.

Tip : Once you have a finished floor plan, it's a good idea to make a couple of photocopies so you can try different furniture layouts.

With your completed floor plan in hand, it's time to answer four questions that will help you figure out the ideal floor plan for you. This is super easy to do. Simply take out your floor plan and draw a pair of lines that cut each wall in half. These are the balance lines of a room and they divide the room into 4 equal-sized areas.

In order to have a balanced room, the visual weight of the furniture on one side of the room should be about the same as the weight of the furniture on the opposite side of the room. In essence what you are asking is "Where can I not place any furniture because it will be in the way of the natural flow of people as they move about the room?

Allow 12 inches to 15 inches of clear space in front of windows. This is the simplest question to answer. When you enter the room, what is the most important feature of the room that calls out for attention? All major furniture arrangements should be designed around that item. Some rooms have an existing focal point, like a fireplace. If your room doesn't have a natural focal point, you must create one.

Try a large-scale piece of art, a gallery wall, or a console and television. Since we have positioned all of the furniture in relation to the focal point, the last piece of the puzzle when it comes to furniture arrangement is to not forget the walls.

If the fireplace is your focal point, draw a line that runs floor to ceiling through the center of it on the floor plan. In order to find your axis, simply draw an imaginary line that runs floor to ceiling from the center of your focal point.

The purpose of this axis is to give you a line along which you can add decoration, such as a mirror or piece of artwork above the fireplace. To take things a step further, extend the axis line to the wall opposite the focal point to create the same visual weight.

In our fireplace example, you could perhaps feature a wall of bookcases flanked by chairs. Draw paper scale models of your furniture, or search for printable versions online.

To draw your own, use the same scale of 1 box equals 1 foot to cut out shapes for your furniture pieces. Before ordering new furniture or moving around existing pieces, use some painters tape to map out the arrangement on your actual floor.Access all project information from wherever you are.
